Why does my UM email address (xxx@umiami.edu) have to point to my UMail account?

Easy answer:

The IT security team are morons at UM. Plain and simple. They’re the biggest bunch of incompetents I have ever had the displeasure to work with (and against). These "security" protocols that they keep bumping around have been breaking a lot of things. And the rest was never implemented (multistreaming was three or four years ago, used for Universities, and they STILL don’t support it!)

Best (only) thing you can do. Complain.

I’m sorry that you have to deal with their idiocracy as well.

For the record, do not confuse the security team with the regular IT guys. The regulars are wonderful people, and they also see the lack of merit in the Security team

Throughout the year, the University of Miami has many instances when it is necessary to communicate directly with students about critical information and deadlines (e.g. hurricanes and emergency procedures). With the advent of the alias (jdoe@umiami.edu) capability at UM, all students have a UM email address and CaneID that provides easy access from any computer on the internet. All official notifications from the University of Miami to students are sent electronically to their UM email alias. Currently, as implemented, students are permitted to forward their UM email alias address to third party email providers. This was a useful process for many students and worked well for a period of time. However, with the increasing problem of unsolicited email (SPAM), the policies of the major third party providers changed.
