Type II audits are typically engaged in when transactions, particularly monetary transactions, are handled in an outsourced environment such as that represented by ASPs and online merchants. On the other hand, tax research and consulting service providers do not engage in monetary transactions and thus a Type I audit is typically deemed appropriate to formally establish the scope and strength of the provider’s controls.
