Why does the chess engine appear to be slowing down (searching less positions per second, or not seeing as deep in the same amount of time), or even speeding up, in some cases?

There are several possible causes of this. Firstly, The King can see more “nodes” if the current position of the game is less complex. Therefore, with less pieces on the board, The King will more likely appear to be searching faster. Of course, if you have two computer personalities playing against each other, then they are both sharing the CPU and will only be able to search approximately half as fast compared to their speed if they were playing against a human. Also, opening the Visual Thinking window or checking the “Chessmaster” checkbox in the Thinking Lines window will cause a “Mentor” engine (which is basically a copy of the Chessmaster personality) to start thinking about the current position. Therefore, it is possible to have THREE engines thinking at the same time on your computer. Obviously, this will make each engine’s overall performance weaker. Additionally, checking either the White or Black checkbox in the Thinking Lines window, will make the program run SLIGHTLY slower
