Why has NELA expanded its role beyond guaranteeing student loans?
Since 1978 NELA has been successfully performing its core function of guaranteeing student loans. Because technology has advanced and the guarantee process has become more automated, NELA has more resources available to promote access to higher education. Direct contact with borrowers who have delinquent or defaulted loans has reinforced the fact that there is a critical need for more assistance in planning and paying for college. Through our community outreach efforts, including the NELA Center for Student Success, we are helping families gain the knowledge necessary to successfully reach their dreams of higher education. Our 25 years of experience in financial aid has shown that informed students borrow responsibly, complete their education and repay their loans, helping NELA meet its mission to promote responsible borrowing and money management.
