Why identify trees?
Tree identification will be crucial to you if you are involved with the management of, or surveying and protection of, any site. Trees are at the base of the food chain and so many other species ultimately depend upon them. Many species are reliant on particular species of tree and knowing which trees occur on a site is a guide to what other species may also occur. Although many species are widespread and relatively common, some are scarce and it is worth being aware of these if any habitat work is being carried out on a site – you wouldn’t want Wild Service trees cut down by mistake! Having a good knowledge of trees would avoid such events happening. Identifying trees in winter is fairly simple once you have learnt a few key features to look for.
