Why is a capacitor used with reversible AC synchronous motors?

0

A reversible motor is basically 2 motor coils stacked on top of on another. And in order to ensure the desired direction of rotation and capacitor is used to de-phase one of these coils so that one coil will start rotating earlier than the other. A switch can be used to change which coil starts earlier and depending on which one starts earlier determines the direction of rotation.
