why is chocolate associated with Valentines Day?
The earliest record of chocolate was over 2000 years ago in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. It is thought that the ancient Mayan civilisation first made a frothy, bitter drink from the seeds of the Cacao (kah KOW) tree. The ground seeds were made into a chocolate paste and mixed with water and other spices. The chocolate drink was used in special ceremonies, and couples drank it as part of their marriage ceremony. Chocolate was so important to the Maya people that they collected the seeds and grew them in their own gardens.
