Why is data management important?
The need for data management is growing rapidly. Today, over half the employees in large corporations have a PC, and more than two-thirds of these are connected to other computers on LANs (Local Area Networks)! Storage requirements of LANs are growing at a staggering rate. Not too long ago an average file server might have had 100 megabytes of storage. Many of today’s servers handle gigabytes of data. The ability to store data will continue to grow and the question of how to protect all this data has become a critical one. Data security no longer means just keeping unauthorized users away from your systems or guarding against viruses. It means being able to make a backup of the enormous amount of data that today’s servers and workstations can hold. Every day that goes by without a backup is a risk. You are gambling that your hard disk won’t crash, or that someone won’t accidentally erase your files, or that a fire won’t destroy your data, or that a virus won’t infect your data. The onl
