Why is echo cancellation needed?
In a hands-free conferencing environment, the voice signal being transmitted through the speakers is frequently picked up by the microphone, which re-transmits that audio through the speakers a second time, creating an “acoustic loop”. When an acoustic loop occurs, the result can be unwanted echo and howling, and generally very poor audio quality for conference participants. In order to achieve good quality audio, conferencing users have either been limited to cumbersome headsets or were forced purchase expensive echo-cancellation microphones.
