Why is it called GL if it isnt General Ledger?
XBRL GL did indeed begin as a representation of the information to flow in to and out from a US-centric general ledger system. Theoretically, a sophisticated ERP systems general journal history file can hold almost all of the information you would expect to see in sub-ledgers. As we began to collaborate with others around the world, we found that one country or regions general ledger held different information, in different levels of detail, than others. Continental European general ledger systems needed to store detailed information that might be found in separate Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable sub-ledger systems in the United States, for example. Over time, XBRL GL began to represent more than would be found in any country or regions general ledger and the term GL became more of a weight than a help.
