I don’t think it is currently. I would have to say Linux is more influential currently. Microsoft has had a stronghold for a long time, but with many individuals, companies, governments implementing Linux, Microsoft is being forced to play a bit more fairly. They’ve lost lawsuits and have been require to offer individuals rebates if they didn’t use the copy of Windows preinstalled on a new PC. Apple has been making quite the comeback over the past few years and they have switched from a custom OS to a Linux (BSD) Kernel with a MAC front end. Many specialized appliances (firewalls, etc) are running on Linux kernels.

Because Microsoft lobbied to get Windows installed on most newly built computers for work and home use and managed to get the cost hidden into the cost of the computer in most cases. This gave them a huge advantage.
