Why is my ALRM routine causing a heisenbug?

This was one of the first gotchas I encountered when doing unix programming. malloc(3) isn’t guaranteed to be reentrant; so, if your ALRM routine uses malloc, it will randomly corrupt the malloc arena (because it will randomly be interrupting a malloc library call). Ugh.
