A thermos works because it uses a vacuum in between the outer and inner layers. That is, completely empty space. A thermos is basically two separate containers, with nothing in between them , not even air. The two containers connect at very few points. Heat can only transfer through matter. If there’s no matter between the inner container and outer container, there’s no way for the heat of a hot beverage to escape, and there’s no way for heat outside the thermos to get into a cold beverage. Heat doesn’t just go away – it has to go somewhere, and it has to go by transferring to an adjacent piece of matter.
