Why isnt there a fixed order of play for the different colours?

A. Because there doesnt need to be. If you want to decide quickly just use this order of play: Black, Red/Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, any other colour. Some players prefer to play with one favourite colour: and if the players can agree colours then it seems best to vary the order of play rather than for the player attached to the colour blue always to be the last to take their turn. The simplest thing is to play in the order black, red, (yellow, green, blue) and play several games with the person to go first changing each time.
