Why not just a proximity sensor?
Proximity sensors can detect a child standing within a meter or so of the vehicle`s rear. But this distance is NOT enough for drivers to stop in time if they are reversing at about 3km/h. They are mostly useful for detecting obstacles while the car is stationary, prior to reversing. Why not just a video camera? When reverse is first engaged, a driver may not look at the video screen immediately before moving. However, a proximity sensor will provide an audible alert if there is an obstacle detected and immediately attract the driver`s attention to the screen.
