Why not put gratings over airplane jet engine intakes….to reduce bird-strike damage?

All airplane engine manufacturers do extensive testing with frozen turkeys mostly during engine testing, they design engine parts to be extremely durable and tough in the rare event of a multiple bird strike, All engines can take a lot of abuse it takes a lot more than one bird to damage a jet engine, at the speeds they are flying and due to aerodynamic principals, grates or covers are not fuel efficient or necessary, if you hit a flock of birds at 500 knots NOTHING WILL STAND UP TO THE PRESSURE, The biggest problem is for take offs,The most critical time for any airplane, is when taking off, this is the most vulnerable time for a single engine, or multi engine air plane, Also the direction of engine rotation, (and torque ) can play a huge role as well, A pilot not being on top of his game, if he or she loses power at the wrong time, can flip the airplane upside down almost instantly and this is not what you want to happen when taking off with a full load of passengers and jet fuel, Th

diced seagull just doesn’t taste the same , if your going to have a birdstrike you might as well go the whole hog and completely shred it , after that the other answers were better than mine , the drag coefficient of a grill or grid over engine intake reduces airflow to the engine making it work harder to achieve the same targets , this will in turn reduce engine life and lead to massive increases in air fares, and any way they havn’t got time to mess about grilling their birds by the time their done the planes landed
