Why Saint Andrew for Scotland?
There are a few versions of the story of how Saint Andrew came to be Patron Saint of Scotland. In one, it is said that when, in the year 345, Emperor Constantine decided that Andrew’s bones should be moved to Constantinople from Patrae, an angel told Saint Regulus to transport the relics instead to the far North-west, finally instructing him to land on the East coast of Fife, in Scotland, where he founded the Saint Andrew’s which is famously known the World over for being the home of golf. Another story tells us that when a Pictish king, Ongus prayed for guidance before battle, he saw a saltire cross formed of clouds in the sky and declared that Saint Andrew was guiding him and that if the battle be won that day, Saint Andrew would be held as the Patron Saint of the country. He won, of course.
