Why should believers pray for Israel/Jerusalem?
We are commanded to pray for Israel. “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.”(Psalms 122:6) We are expected to be a blessing to Israel, and part of being a blessing to Israel is to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, and implicit in that commandment is that we should pray for the peace of all Israel. Praying for the peace of Jerusalem is to the benefit of both Arabs and Jewish people alike. When we pray for the peace of Jerusalem, we are praying that God’s complete shalom would envelope the city and indeed the entire nation. When Jerusalem prospers, we ALL prosper. Again the Scriptures say. “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD’s hand double for all her sins.” (Isaiah 40:1-2) In praying for Jerusalem’s peace, we should seek out ways of being facilitators of that peace.
