Why should the handbrake lever suddenly slacken off on 1996 Vauxhall Cavalier TD?

Hi, I’d advise checking the handbrake cable where it passes through the guide on the rear semi trailing arm. The brackets on many Vauxhall cars expand, allowing the top hat style guide on the cable to pull through, thus reducing the tension on the cable at the lever end. I’ve had the same problem on My Calibra, both sides. Usually, you can knock it back through the guide on the suspension arm and tap the guide back into place, restoring correct fitment and operation. Hope this is of assistance.
