Why Study Medical Microbiology as part of a Combined Honours Degree?
Microbiology is the study of all forms of life too small to be seen by the naked eye. These include viruses, bacteria, yeasts, protozoa and some fungi. We study all aspects of these micro-organisms, their properties, their many and varied roles, and their interactions with other species especially humans. A major emphasis of the programme is understanding the properties of micro-organisms and the mechanisms by which they are able to enter the body and cause disease. Such understanding is essential in improving infectious disease diagnosis and control.
