Why the Increase in Unnecessary C-section Surgeries?
The answer is “Lawyers”. Malpractice lawyers are causing the alarming increase in surgery. The most common malpractice action taken against doctors is failure to perform a C-section. The greed cycle was apparently started when the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists issued new guidelines for patients in labor that require OB/GYN doctors to be “readily available”. This guideline means that doctors can’t leave the hospital or vicinity of the patient to attend to other business or patients. A study from 2006 revealed that cesarean rates are more impacted by local malpractice environments then the mother’s risk profiles.4 VBACS ( vaginal births after Cesareans )are down by one-fourth since the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists issued a recommendation that doctors be “readily available” when the woman was in labor. The end result? Many doctors fear the new clause that forces them to stay with the patient in labor that can be used against them in a lawsuit.
