Why the selectors pick new players just for formality?

It happens with all teams. In all countries teams pick a young player who tours with their team, this player has little chance of actually playing a match on tour, but he is brought on tour to “get experience of touring at International level”. I suppose the selectors theory is that new players who have experience of touring are more likely to perform if they have some touring experience behind them. I don’t see it as a bad idea. It allows new players to get closer to team mates and build relationships, for when they do make it into the team.
