Why use family tree software?
A family tree program creates a sophisticated database that records your family history and can be used to analyse it in a variety of ways. You might want to explain the links between members, create groups and plot events on a timeline. You can also create charts, reports and lists, and publish the information in newsletters, booklets and on websites. Most programs work in the same way: you add information about the people in your family — who they are and how they’re related — and it’s arranged into searchable and viewable entries. Most programs assume you’re the starting point and begin with your name, gender, birth date and any other details. Next you move onto your parents, spouse and children to build your family tree. You can usually enter information in one of three views: family, pedigree or individual. The family view shows an individual linked with spouse, children and parents; pedigree shows generations; individual shows all the details for one person. Once you have a few
