Hundreds of birds are being seized by State Police in an apparent cockfighting ring investigation. Troopers who were on an unrelated call in Harwinton, became suspicious of activity a private farm on Litchfield Road (Rt. 118), according to State Police. A “significant number” of birds and roosters were found and police are considering the possibility that this was connected to a cockfighting ring. The investigation will continue through Friday afternoon.
Police recovered more than 3 hundred roosters, hens and chicks from a Litchfield couple after investigating a hang up phone call from the house. After obtaining a search warrant, they returned and uncovered what appeared to be a large operation where they bred, raised and groomed the birds for cockfighting. They did not find a fighting ring, but did find spurs and glue and other paraphenalia for fighting. Police suspect the birds were being fought in another location. The couple is now facing several charges including animal cruelty.
