Will chocolate icing taste good on Sugar Cookies?
Absolutely, chocolate will taste great. There is no substitute for the taste of vanilla, unless you just happen to have a box of instant vanilla pudding mix, You could use a Tablespoon of that in your dough and it would flavor it. I wouldn’t use zest with chocolate. Do you have any nuts? You could crumble some of them on the top or even mix them into your dough. You could add raisins or a TBS of orange juice. Basic sugar cookie dough can take a lot of changes and still taste fine. I have used brown sugar instead of white, gives it a caramel taste. A little coffee added, say a tsp, if you have decaf, would add a lot of flavor and go great with the chocolate frosting. Mocha flavor there. You can flavor them with peanut butter… Add it to the chocolate frosting.
