Every year during mid-August, the earth passes close to the orbit of the Swift-Tuttle comet. This comet takes more than 100 years to circle the sun and leaves a trail of debris as it roars through space. It’s an early call for the best viewing, which is around 4a.m. Wednesday. For non-early morning risers, the best bet is to look outside around 11 p.m. Tuesday or 12 a.m. Wednesday. Meteorologist Sally Severson said to look towards the northeast where you will see the constellation of Perseus. Meteor showers come when the earth moves into or near the comet’s debris fields. The sky’s display occurs when the bits of comet rock and dust collide with our atmosphere. There will be some light competition from the moon, but astronomers say you should still see a few dozen meteors an hour.
