Will Kabila Lead the DRC Into a New Era? Wednesday December 6, 2006With the swearing in of its first-ever democratically elected president, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is at a turning point. At his inauguration, President Joseph Kabila announced he “would abide by ‘the trilogy of good governance, democracy, and respect for human rights'”, reports BBC News. Kabila now leads a country that has been kept in abeyance by thousands of UN peacekeepers since the ending of the devastating civil war in which, it is estimated, some four million people died. Let us hope he will manage to at least keep the country out of a state of war, and even perhaps bring it to a stage where the next elections can be held without such intense UN involvement.
