There is no question that Windows is the dominant operating system in the workplace, and the majority of computers on the OES campus are running Windows. If we consider the core needs of Middle School students, they are met well by the Apple OS X operating system, Microsoft Office and other available applications. At the Middle School level, all students need equal access and equal opportunity to use technology. Their main technology learning goals at this stage are to use common productive software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) in authentic, productive ways, while also learning to use the Internet for quality research and communication. The features of Microsoft Word, for example, are nearly identical on both the Apple OS X and Windows. Math and science needs are also covered by cross-platform software (Vernier Logger Pro, Geometer’s Sketchpad, and others).
