Would buying a better router vastly increase my internet speed?
you can increase your internet speed with your existing router by not using multiple devices on the same connection, clearing unwanted programs that run on the backgound and use lot of bandwidth and clearing your cookies, cache and browsing history regulary… With this small changes make an internet speed test ScanmySpeed.com… if you still find there is no improvement then you can check with your ISP and upgrade your router for better results…
The purpose of a faster router is to increase the speed between computers, and to increase the LAN speed to the internet. (No single connection on the internet is going to run at more than about 1mbps these days (unless the other end of that connection is within about 100 miles), but if you have 20 computers on a wireless LAN, each of them can be doing 10 1mbps downloads – that would take a 200mbps connection to the internet – including a 200mbps or better router. In a home environment, anything faster than 54mbps is a bit of a waste. I’m running 2 VoIP lines, 3 servers, all my downloading and my wife plays World of Warcraft – on a 54mbps router with a 15mbps connection. And the only place I can run out of bandwidth is that 15mbps connection to my provider. When we start seeing connections in excess of 54mbps – in a year or two – 54mbps routers will be the bottleneck point, but not until then, and VERY few people will actually need that speed.
