Young Learners: When are they ready to learn subtraction? Tuesday January 29, 2008Subtraction like any other math concept requires the building blocks to be in place. Conservation of number is certainly one of them. In other words, does the child know that the symbolic number represents that many things? Can they represent this concretely? If so, there’s a good chance they’re ready to begin the process of subtraction. However, begin with 1 less than and make sure that they know 1 less than from 1 through to 20. You can move through the process of 2 less than, 5 less than etc. Always begin concretely before moving to the symbolic representation. Try some of these basic subtraction worksheets.
