Lithium is one of the older drugs for both bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It’s still in use because for a lot of people, it’s highly effective. There are two schools of thought among doctors and mental health providers. One school holds that the first drugs to be prescribed should be the older drugs, like lithium. The other holds that you should skip the older drugs, and go right to the newer ones. I have chronic clinical depression, and the first antidepressant I took was imipramine, one of the old tricyclics. It worked for a time, but I had to move on to newer drugs. I do think it’s best to start with the older ones, since they have a proven track record, and there is plenty of research on them, and on how a patient responds to them. Where lithium has a great strength, and the reason I suspect it was given to you (if it’s been given to you) is because it treats both bipolar and schizophrenia, especially when the schizophrenia is associated with the mood changes of bipolar disord
