Does Security guard and Private investigator licences helps when applying for Policing Career?
Before Apr 15, 2010, having an Ontario security guard license / private investigator license will get you no further ahead at all when applying to be a police constable with a police service. There currently are next-to-none requirements for getting one- I’ve heard of individuals with a criminal record containing serious offences, obtaining a SG/PI license. Only having had a SG/PI license PLUS experience in the field will be beneficial. As of Apr 15, under new legislation, security guards and private investigators must undergo basic training in the security industry before they can get the security license. While this training is certainly law enforcement-related, its not very substantial experience when applying to a police service. They’ll value life experience and certain proven skills (like management, teamwork, dealing with people, etc) much more than basic security guard training. Basically everything in this training will be far surpassed by the training at Ontario Police Colleg
