Each year during Hanukkah millions of menorahs are lit all across the world. The lighting of the candles is a symbolic gesture celebrating the rekindling of the eternal flame in the Jewish Temple after the Maccabean army’s victory over its Syrian enemy. The eight candles of Hanukkah are in celebration of the miracle of a day’s worth of oil burning for eight days. This miracle is also celebrated by thousands who attend the annual National Hanukkah Menorah Lighting Ceremony on the Ellipse in Washington, D.C.
