But when you want to update again, a painting job is required. Painting thermofoil is like painting plastic -- preparing the surface before applying paint is key to success. With the right plastic primer and some hard sanding, you can have your thermofoil cabinets ready for a fresh new coat of paint. All it takes is some hard work and a free weekend. Disassemble the cabinets as much as possible with a screwdriver. Remove any knobs, doors and drawer fronts that you can. It will make sanding and painting much easier and efficient.
