Mold may not be just on the surface of a wall. If the material is porous, such as drywall or sheetrock, the mold may go all the way in or even be coming from the inside of the wall, especially if there is a leak within the wall. The simplest order in which to do things, if dealing with a porous wall, is to cut out a piece and inspect how deep the mold goes in before scrubbing laboriously layer after layer. This also helps gain information about the moisture source. Fix any source of moisture so that your hard work isn’t immediately undone.
