How does alfred hitchcock create suspense within his films?
One of the most common he uses is a device whereby the audience knows something that the characters don’t know. For example, people are sitting around a table, under which is a bomb ticking away, the people at the table don’t know it’s there, but the audience does. Then, add some music that slowly builds to a climax. That’s one way. Other ways, with suspense in general, is always leaving something to the imagination (just look at Psycho), creating a a situation that wasn’t expected (such as the ambassador getting stabbed in North by Northwest) and having the character have to get out of said situation, as well as creating a tense situation in which the way out is unknown to the audience (see also North by Northwest, the train scene and the mansion scene).
