Mary is important because she is the link to the truth. In Act one Abiagil Williams is threatening the girls so that none of them will tell anyone what they did in the woods. Mary Warren is the only girl willing to stand up to Abigail, which shows that she knows that what they’re doing is wrong. Mary also is the means by which Proctor’s wife is conficted of witchcraft. When she gives Elizabeth the poppet that she had sewn in court, it seems to be an innocent gift. Abigail however knows that mary stuck the needle in the doll for safekeeping and sticks herself with a needle in the same place, thus fufilling her plan to execute Goody Proctor. I believe that mary is innocent in this, but it is still because of her doll that she is convicted nonetheless. In act 2 Proctor convinces her to join sides with him and testify against abby and the other girls, but when Abigail pretends that Mary is sending her spirit on her she is frightened about the conviction that will come with telling the trut
