How is Caring for our Country different from previous natural resource management programs?
Caring for our Country began on 1 July 2008 and integrates the delivery of the Australian Government’s previous natural resource management programs. These include the Natural Heritage Trust, the National Landcare Program, the Environmental Stewardship Program and the Working on Country Indigenous land and environmental program. It also incorporates a range of other significant elements including World Heritage areas and implementing a number of the government’s 2007 election commitments such as rescuing the Great Barrier Reef and saving the endangered Tasmanian devil. By taking a new streamlined approach to managing Australia’s outstanding natural environment and farmlands the government is aiming for more strategic and targeted results. This will be done by having a single entry point for all funding requests at the one time, rather than many calls over differing times.
