Indigenous people struggle to engage meaningfully in natural resource management. Why is Caring for our Country any different?
Caring for our Country has a strong emphasis on delivering its outcomes through partnerships. Caring for our Country recognises the important role and knowledge Indigenous people have in managing the environment, and it is expected that investment proposals will engage with Indigenous communities to ensure that the outcomes and targets of Caring for our Country are met. The Australian Government strongly encourages proposals to include active engagement with Indigenous people. Proposals that incorporate Indigenous ecological knowledge into achieving Caring for our Country targets are also encouraged- especially those that draw together the use of traditional ecological knowledge, local knowledge and formal science to protect, restore and better manage the environment and productive agricultural lands. Indigenous communities can obtain additional support from the Australian Government.
