I have noticed bare pavements due to salting and plowing on major thoroughfares in Oak Lawn and on snow routes but not residential streets. Why?
Many Chicago metropolitan communities like Oak Lawn have used to date more salt than they did all last season. Salt suppliers are behind close to two weeks and the supply is limited due to frozen rivers and ice on the Great lakes making navigation for transporting vessels difficult and slow. Oak Lawn plows and salts with a commitment to provide safe roadways but must conserve salt for emergencies. “Residential streets will receive less salt than in the past but the Village will continue its deicing activities on main arterial roadways, snow routes, and intersections.” Drivers as always are urged to be cognizant of weather and road conditions and allow for more travel time during winter snow and ice events.
