Is the temporary Blacksburg Middle School location safe for students?
Old Christiansburg Middle School has been used by several school programs since 2003. The building is safe and ready for students. As renovations occur, we are working with town officials to ensure that all renovations meet all codes and regulations. Air Quality Testing/Asbestos Most schools built between 1930 and the early 1980s may have asbestos containing materials. The asbestos becomes an issue when construction or renovation disturbs the material. In such cases, proper procedures for asbestos abatement are always implemented as part of our standard protocol. Air Quality tests are conducted after all asbestos removal procedures, per AHERA guidelines. The most recent test for the building was on April 12, 2010 and the results cleared the space for occupancy. The tests will be conducted again before students enter the building on August 30, after any additional asbestos removal takes place.
