What are some of the implementation challenges?
A. One major implementation challenge has been the shortage of mental health professionals, especially those with bi-lingual skills, compounded by the high-cost of living in Monterey County. Statewide, 4,300 new positions have been created to implement MHSA. Regional work force development efforts with community and state colleges and high schools have begun, and additional in-service training opportunities are being scheduled. Despite these efforts, the Division currently has several vacant Psychiatric Social Worker positions. Recruitment and retention of Psychiatrists is an on-going effort as well. A list of open positions can be viewed here: www.co.monterey.ca.us/health/jobs.htm This Q&A was put together by the Monterey County Health Department, Behavioral Health Division using information from the California Department of Mental Health, the Monterey County Community Services and Supports Plan and Contra Costa County Mental Health Division.
