What are the chances of having triplets?
The chances of having fraternal triplets are 1 in 6400 while the chance of having identical triplets is 1 in 500,000. The rate can also be seen as a multiple ratio of 1:89 per order of magnitude. In simplest terms, that means your chance of having an extra child is 1:89. So having twins is 1:89, for triplets you take that number and recalculate at 1:89 again, and so on for each additional child (quads, quins etc). However, you can also use this ratio system for calculating the new odds that occur if you yourself are a multiple with family history. Or, take the example of a woman over 35 whose chances of having twins is 1 in 27. That means her chances of triplets are 1:27 times 1:27.
