I did not begin cracking my knuckles until my early twenties. It was about the same time that I began gaining weight. Like you, if I do not crack my knuckles periodically they begin to hurt (and will crack on their own, quite loudly and quite painfully). I crack them to relieve the pain. I also only move the joints through full extension in a natural direction. In other words, I do not pull my fingers out from my hand, rather I flex my fingers by interlacing both hands and moving my fingers that way. This past year I’ve begun exercising and losing weight. As I’ve gotten my body into better shape I’ve noticed that my finger cracking is decreasing, both in frequency and in the pain felt before I crack. Also, my right ankle used to crack on it’s own (also loudly and painfully) and it has stopped doing that. I have been cracking for 20 years and not only do I not see any signs of knuckle deformation or arthritis, I have very strong knuckles and wrists (I work on computers and have no probl
