What is a bong?
A bong, also commonly known as a water pipe, is a smoking device, generally used to smoke cannabis or tobacco, but also other substances. The construction of a bong and its principle of action is similar to that of the bubbler. Smoking a bong contrasts with smoking a pipe or cigarette in two major ways: bongs cool the smoke before it enters the user’s lungs (making it easier to smoke a bong than a join or pipe), and a large amount of smoke is inhaled quickly as opposed to the smaller, more frequent, inhalations from pipe or a cannabis joint. A bong is a special kind of smoking pipe. It looks like container filled to the half with water. A glass pipe with a bowl shaped container on the end will go into water chamber. Second pipe with a mouthpiece enters also the chamber but is positioned above the level of the water. Tobacco is placed in the bowl and lighted. After you light the tobacco, slowly suck from the mouthpiece of the pipe. The air pressure will become lower and this will cause air to go from the bowl into the water where it will get filtered, into the chamber and from there into the lungs. The smoke will be cooled down and filtered by the water. Be careful, because when you move your finger from the hole, the smoke goes straight into your lungs so you should be prepared! The bong is considered to be much older than the water pipe and is probably the older form of Ottoman water pipe known as “Nargile”. Most agree that the word Bong marks the coming of age of the global, cosmopolitan Bengali. Something beyond the familiar, familial chha-posha Bengali.
