What is the role of the coastal treaty tribes in MPR?
OCNMS is unique in the fact that it lays completely within the usual and accustomed fishing areas of several treaty tribes. These tribes have treaty reserved rights and an adjudicated role in the co-management of those treaty protected resources. Any proposed changes to the sanctuary’s current management plan will be done in recognition of these rights and the tribe’s management role. In addition the sanctuary has an obligation to consult with these tribes on a government to government basis. The MPR process will be modified to meet this obligation.
