Why is denim favored as the most comfortable fabric?
The fabric is more comfortable mentally than physically. Ironically, for a fabric that began as rough work pants, it is now associated more with leisure activities. Physically, it is stiff and has little give to it, and often worn way too tight to be called truly comfortable. But it is loved for its informality. Even worn, faded or threadbare denim is still acceptable wear in public. Heck, they “wear” it and fade it at the factory! Like the Marlboro Man, it is a powerful symbol of ruggedness and independence of social roles. It is a common denominator of clothing for all classes in America, and thus reinforces our native attraction to the class-free society.
