In 30 years of WW2 research I have never seen verifiable evidence that the Japanese were willing to surrender before the bombing. The majority of websites that do lay claim to having “proof” that they were negotiating through Sweden also claim that David Irving is a serious Historian. If you don`t know David Irving you are lucky. He claims the Holocaust never happened, hence my reluctance to believe such sites. My standard Hiroshima answer below answers part one of your question. There were three alternatives to the Atomic bombing of Japan with it’s attendant 200,000 (approx) casualties Firstly, hold off on the Nukes and bomb the Japanese into submission using conventional bombs.
