1. It is not easy to predict the future, especially regarding scientific inventions as well as the influence of such inventions on us. Over the years, we have invented machines with the aim of carrying out specific tasks only for them to create more possibilities that affect our future positively and conversely. For instance, when we introduced the internet, little was known about the positive effect resulting from social media on business, and its resultant effect on the offline socialization amongst us. According to experts’ debates on AI, there is a lot to fear regarding whatever the future has to offer. This is based on the capabilities of the AI both from a positive and negative point of view.

Perhaps one of the most notable human inventions is the introduction and development of artificial intelligence (AI). This is mainly the use of machines to carry out tasks that we have traditionally done as humans. Many commentators understand Artificial Intelligence in terms of robots. Some of us have had a direct experience with robots while others have learned of them from movies and illustrations in narratives. Either way, we have an idea of how AI works and its functions in various scenarios. AI has been used to makes work easier for humans, while also perfecting some tasks that require precision and perfect judgment that we cannot make by ourselves.

Today we have heard of computers that control many functions that could have been carried out by humans, including manufacturing procedures, transport sector control and many other functions that are based on data analytics, as well as the internet. Many more inventions are still arising from blue chip companies and most of us sit behind our computers to browse on new inventions in a mixture of awe and confusion. We are watching geeks on a daily basis explain things that sound like a promise of new inventions that are going to make our future seem like the scenes from science fiction movies- some of us like this while the rest do not know what to feel about it.

There is the need to note that the AI used currently can only operate as far as we want them to. This form of intelligence is known as ANI, an acronym for Artificial Narrow Intelligence or more commonly as “weak intelligence”. It is a more caution-based intelligence, or maybe just a precursor of what is to come in the future. This is the usual stuff that we see like ordinary computers and robotics, among other automated electronics of today. The devices are usually aligned to perform a specific function beyond which are not typical tasks. For instance, a robot that has been programmed to serve as a coffeehouse barista will only function according to the hospitality programs set in it and not extend its services beyond that. As such, it is possible and easy to control and predict the functions of the robot in this case.

Smartphone applications have become some of the latest uses of ANI, which makes the technology more accessible to the layman. People are capable of monitoring their ways of life, including their position, purchasing preferences and trends, as well as their finance and lifestyles, thanks to dedicated ANI technologies in the name of smartphone applications. These are things that we can control by accessing the smartphone, downloading and activating the applications or even uninstalling them at our own will. However, many researchers and artificial intelligence scientists are concerned with the other forms of intelligence that might be a reality in the future. The scientists worry about what the future versions of self-aware computers and robots would look like in a number of ways.

The future intelligence will be based on the AGI technology, which stands for Artificial General Intelligence. As the name suggests, the AGI will entail machines, computers and other devices that will be able to carry out more than one task. The machines will be able to carry out maybe as many tasks as we can as humans. To make this even scarier (to the conservatives), the machines will be able to perfect what we can do as humans. This has the potential of replacing us in many sectors of the global economy, especially doing away with human labor and eliminating redundancy at work. Many people will be left out of work, and this might have a huge economic impact on people when the time comes.

The employers of the future will not be blamed for opting for the AGI technology to increase the ROI (Return on Investment). The new intelligence will be based on machines that will not require holidays, maternity leaves, increased pay or our typical pat on the back, in order to perform better. In fact, the robots will not even need our usual fifteen minutes nap, let alone sleeping, which we would not do without in many cases. The AGI starts to become our enemy when it replaces us to appear more ideal to the boss than us, yet we need the money! See, the robots do not have families, homes or a dream car in their minds, but we do. And now we are going to lose our only hope of getting those goodies in life thanks to a combination of blue chips and semiconductors? No way! Most of us will agree that we need money more that the AGI machines.

That AGI is already in our bad books is a fact. Most of us agree that the bit of replacing humans at the workplace is a negativity courtesy of the intended now technology. The available “weak intelligence” already shows how dedicated the robots are in taking away all of our jobs, including the less fancied MacDonald’s cashier or waiter’s positions. It seems as if the AGI comes with even a bigger promised of annihilating us from the workplace totally. However, some positive sides of the same are still present. For instance, the use of those robots in more complex manufacturing processes reduces errors and increases productivity. This means that firms will make more money from AGI, and economies could blossom. As a result, we could receive handouts from the government, buy fancy houses and cars, and eat junk food as the robots work on our behalf. Lazy times ahead.

On the contrary, other researchers and commentators like Stephen Hawking and Bill Gates believe that we should be very wary with the “lazy times” that come with “enslaving intelligence”. The three agree that the introduction of AGI in the future is inevitable, but also caution that the effects of such inventions might be more than we can handle as a race. Researchers have speculated the introduction of Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI), which is the ultimate description of AI. According to researchers, the projected AGI era is still many years from realization. Most of the commentators and professionals in the intelligence sector believe that the first AGI will be introduced over the next 50 years or even less. However, we still have to worry regarding the introduction of an even more capable AI technology as the ASI.

According to research, ASI will be based on AGI, but with the ability of such machines to be self-aware. The machines will be capable of understanding things the way the human brain does and will be able to make decisions based on independent judgments. The judgment will be better than ours, as robots will be able to stay away from the usual disruptions that our human judgment faces, including emotions and errors based on subjective thinking. However, some researchers believe that the ASI could even be capable of subjective thinking to some extent. Nevertheless, the fact that we will have little or no influence on the activities and decisions made by robots is something that we need to worry about. The robots and machines in the future AI eras would be capable of thinking like, with and better than us, and this is making many of us jittery.

The most important thing that worries us regarding the future of AI is the ability of machines to think for themselves. Furthermore, the ability of such machines to develop even more complicated technologies than what we can comprehend. The development of machines and technologies that are going to be harder for us to control, has the potential of giving us more problems than we can predict. We are currently aware of the objective of AI that is to develop machines that we can manipulate for our own benefit. However, questions arise regarding a future where the machines will be capable of making their own decisions regarding the future of human technological development.

Many people have raised a concern regarding giving machines the power to make decisions as machines will be definitely more intelligent than us. It is a common knowledge that we have been able to survive over thousands of years thanks to our ability to be the smartest species on the planet and in the nearby neighborhood (maybe). We are going to give this power to a new race of intelligent machines that are capable of turning the tables against us, if not well-managed. But, really, how can we control a self-aware computer that also happens to be smarter than us? Living amongst creatures that are smarter and more efficient in decision making will bring with it a number of challenges for us. For instance, the computers could even decide to do away with us! This is for the simple reason that we will appear as a liability to such creations much more than a beneficial companion.

Those that see the future from a warlike perspective have argued that future AI will entail the use of self-aware war equipment that has the ability to make independent decisions based on the situations at hand, just like us (or been much better). We are imagining a situation where the machines we made to be our servants turn to be our masters instead. Controlling us and deciding when we can walk, talk or even eat or sleep. This will be some sort of a downfall for the human era. This is from a scary point of view, which is important to talk about as it helps the human race act in a proactive fashion. We have to address our fears regarding the unforeseen future that has the probability of an intelligence explosion that could be a make or break point for the human race. We surely have all the reasons to be worried regarding the future and what it has for us in terms of the effects of a more advanced AI technology.

For many years we have been in control of almost the entire planet and the universe. We have been the leading species, of course, according to our judgment. No other species has been capable of competing with our abilities and capabilities over the years. As such, we have remained the masters of our planet and its surroundings. We moved from being observers of the universe to active influencers and explorers of the galaxies, and the future seems even much better with the possible introduction of ASI. However, the dream to control the universe and travel through it in the future could be in jeopardy if we are not careful regarding the powers that we give to future AI-generated machines and computers.

In the short-term, we will be able to increase our efficiency at work and decision making, our manufacturing, research and development, as well as emergency prevention and response. Our healthcare will probably improve and become cheaper than it is today. We will be able to evolve machines and technologies based on an increasingly easier way to invent, generate, store and analyze data. Nevertheless, it is a common knowledge that there unknown might have a devastating effect on our planet. As such, we have to focus on developing strategies that will impede the possibility of having a robot-operated world in the future where we are subordinates to our own creation. It is necessary to prepare for the future risks and uncertainties to ensure that the future does not turn out to be chaotic.
