People have been enjoying the health benefits of gingko for thousands of years and today it is one of the top selling herbs in the United States. Scientists are studying gingko, unlocking this herb’s secrets. The herb is safe, effective and carries very little risk for side effects.

Scientists believe gingko is an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Research indicates gingko may benefit cerebral insufficiency, which is characterized by impaired concentration, confusion, fatigue, headache, reduced physical performance, dizziness and fatigue. Gingko may also reduce depression and anxiety associated with cerebral insufficiency caused by atherosclerosis, a form of cardiovascular disease.

Evidence seems to favor using gingko for memory enhancement in healthy people, as well as in those with cognitive disease, like Alzheimer’s. Gingko is also effective for reducing altitude sickness, premenstrual syndrome or PMS and improving eye disorders related to aging, such as glaucoma. Gingko also helps macular degeneration, a progressive and degenerative eye disease that impairs your retina. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the United States, and scientists believe the flavonoids in gingko alleviate some of the retinal problems that cause this terrible disease.  Gingko may also reduce certain types of vascular damage done by chemotherapy cancer treatments.

Gingko may also help patients with intermittent claudication, a disease that makes it difficult to walk. Studies show that people with claudication can walk 37 yards further than those taking placebos.

Consult with your physician before taking gingko if you suffer from any major illnesses or are taking any medications, as gingko and all other supplements may interfere with your medication.
